Eight Excuses to Tell Your Spouse, Kids, Coworkers and Friends
So You Can Search the 1940 Census in Peace

Posted by Diane

Start memorizing these excuses now! You'll need them to roll right off your tongue next week when you're forgetting about dinner, ignoring the house and putting off work in order to search the 1940 census:

Your spouse:

"I'm just trying to deal with some schedule problems. Sorry it's taking so long."

“Can it wait? I’m busy doing taxes.”

Your kids:

“I was on the internet ordering you presents just for being so good. Now go do your homework before I change my mind.”

Your coworkers:

“___ , hold my calls. I’m going to be tied up with the Washington account all day.”

Your boss:

"I was just pulling together those names—er, I mean numbers—you requested." (Important: Have a spreadsheet open you can click to if your boss pops up over your shoulder.)

Your friends:

“Can’t make it to choir practice/book club/happy hour on Monday—I’ve got a nasty case of enumeritis.”

“I can’t talk right now. I'm spending time with relatives.”

“Tonight’s not good. I have a date with Steve Morse.”

More on the 1940 Census!

From Vince:

On April 2, records from the 1940 Census will be made available to the public.

Strict laws ensure that records are only unsealed after 72 years, so many family genealogists, historians and researchers are eagerly awaiting the release.

In honor of the records release, the U.S. Census Bureau is holding a countdown to the April 2nd release where you can find an interactive overview of the 1940 Census, historical facts, videos and pictures. The census website will also directly link to the National Archives site where you will be able to find individual 1940 Census records.

It has a short informative video.

The 1940 Census

Leslie's lecture tonight on the 1940 census, available on April 2nd, was excellent, as usual, and full of important information for all of us. If you missed it, you may be out of luck.

Suffice it to say that Steve Morse's site has a tutorial and everything else you need to learn how to navigate the new information. Since it is not indexed, you will need it.

(Happy Birthday, Fred!  The fudge was fabulous, too.)

Reba McEntire

I finally was able to watch the last episode of WDYTYA and I keep liking them more and more. The format was a little differs this time, with Reba doing much of the narration, and some of the actual research, too.

I learned something new, too, when they described indentured servitude, it's origins and consequences. This is something that isn't taught in school - these servants working side by side with slaves.

I have actually found out a lot about my family in the Chicago Tribune, but I cannot find archives for th Sun-Times and I wonder where the archives for the previous Chicago newspapers would be. Are the Chicago libraries The places to look?

Did anyone else watch the episode? What did you think?
